ANYBODY GOING SWIMMING??
Posted in: Uncategorized by Tony on December 15, 2008
The 3.3-metre, 460kg shark was collected as she died of natural causes in the Mapua channel last month.Recent mating scars near her tail indicate she may be pregnant, and scientists hope the dissection will answer questions on the life cycle of mako, growth rates, natural mortality and multiple paternities.
It seems that Mako Sharks are rarely caught so finding this near death from natural causes has allowed New Zealand scientists the chance to have an up front view.
One local even bought a front row seat! An international aquarium company had wanted to embed the shark in ice and take it on tour around the Pacific, but changed its mind when it discovered eight tonnes of ice would be needed to encase the shark.
The dissection will start at Mapua Wharf at 12.30pm and take two to three hours.
Enjoy your swimming this summer !!!
